Based on the exploits of real life criminal Erwin Walker, the film portrays Roy Martin (Richard Basehart), a brilliant thief and sociopath, who eludes the police by listening in to their radio communications. He alters his modus operandi with each successive crime, leading the police to believe that multiple criminals are at work. When he murders a police officer, it spells the beginning of the end for Martin and his career in crime.
